Our approach

NUCMED-NL works for and with the field. We connect stakeholders and initiatives, identify missing links, and help bring promising innovations to patients more quickly, ensuring that innovation and affordability go hand in hand. Our approach is based on three pillars.

From practice to structural improvement
We always start with concrete issues and bottlenecks from the field. We translate the insights we gain from these into structural improvements in the development chain. In this way, we work step by step toward a chain that not only removes individual barriers but also functions more effectively and with better coordination in the long term. This is the core of the FAST approach that NUCMED-NL also employs: from case to system improvement.

The patient perspective is not an afterthought but an integral part of the approach. NUCMED-NL actively collaborates with patient representatives to ensure that their needs and experiences are taken into account in the prioritization of initiatives and the implementation of the research agenda.

Connecting initiatives and filling gaps
We map out and highlight current and planned initiatives in the Dutch TRT field. In doing so, we focus on all links in the development chain, from basic research and radionuclide production to clinical application and patient care. We establish connections between initiators and potential partners and help advance initiatives.

At the same time, based on the TRT Strategic Research Agenda, we actively identify where initiatives are still lacking. Where knowledge gaps or barriers in the chain are not being adequately addressed, NUCMED-NL plays a proactive role in driving or establishing new collaborations. In this way, we work across all eight action areas of the research agenda: from setting priorities and conducting inventories to unlocking knowledge, facilitating collaboration, mobilizing funding for research and infrastructure, improving valorization support, and broadening opportunities for expertise development.

Collaboration and funding
Nuclear therapy development requires intensive collaboration between public and private parties. We help parties navigate the funding landscape, bring suitable partners together for joint applications, and explore both national and European opportunities. Working together lightens the load for everyone and increases the chances of success. Where existing funding instruments do not sufficiently align with the specific characteristics of TRT development, we raise this issue with relevant funders and policymakers.
